SEMBAWANG Rangers' Shariff Abdul Samad was banned for nine months and fined $500 last night for punching Geylang United's Peter Bennett during an S-League match on Sept 19.
The 19-year-old defender had pleaded guilty to a charge of violent conduct last Tuesday, and was given the second longest ban by the League's disciplinary committee for such an offence.
Fighting back tears, Shariff told Timesport after the verdict: 'It was my mistake, and I have to bear the responsibility of my actions.
'I plan to do my national service during this period, but I will definitely return to football once I have served this ban.'
The longest ban was imposed on Tanjong Pagar's Senegalese striker Nicodeme Boucher in 2000. He was suspended for a year for assaulting Tan Kim Leng, then with Singapore Armed Forces FC, in the shower-room after a League match.
Shariff will be banned from all FAS-sanctioned games.
Bennett was also fined $1,000 for striking out at Sembawang's Abdul Aziz Salim - the incident which Shariff said had provoked him.
In addition, Abdul Aziz and Sembawang captain Tawan Sripan were fined $500 and $300 respectively for misconduct, for pushing Bennett during the same match.
The disciplinary committee heard from nine witnesses.

Hope he learned from his mistakes. But I wonder why Peter Bennett wasnt ban for a couple of matches for his role in that match.
